During the episode, main character Spencer Strasmore, played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, ends up purchasing the Chiefs franchise from the Hunt family. The television show has previously featured other NFL teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Rams.
The fictional storylines are based on real-time situations to give an inside look at issues that surround the sports industry and the major players behind the scenes. Johnson recently did an interview with People magazine and talked about “Ballers” ending after this season and his goals for the project, which began five years ago.
“It was an opportunity to not only embrace culture, not only embrace ambition, not only embrace success — which we do in the show — but also embrace the failures, which is a key and critical thing in life, to learn from them,” Johnson said. “I was embracing a game that has been so very good to me personally, and even though things didn’t work out for me and my NFL dreams, and those that I failed at, it was still an opportunity to play a character that loved the game.”
